"Jews in Twentieth-Century Italy" edited by Vittorio Bo and Mario Toscano, is the catalog of the exhibition organized at the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah (MEIS) in Ferrara, from March 29 to October 6, 2024. One hundred years of Italian history are told through the experience of the Jewish minority, which has been present on the Peninsula for over two thousand years. Following the thread of the transformation of the concept of citizenship, the contributions reconstruct a century rich in triumphs but also marked by tragedies and hardships. From the successes of integration during the liberal age, the narrative moves to the consequences of the deprivation of freedoms during the Fascist dictatorship, and finally to the abyss of the Holocaust. After the war, the new challenge begins: rebuilding life. There are many uncertainties and wounds, but with renewed hope, Jewish communities reunite and continue to look to the future, maintaining their strong identity in constant dialogue with society. In this volume, historians, art historians, scholars, communication experts, and Judaists recount one hundred years of illusions and fractures; extraordinary protagonists and stories of courage, love, and rebirth. The collection of documents, photos, paintings, and family objects reconstructs the mosaic of the twentieth century, in which a shared heritage can be found-one that belongs to all and must be preserved by everyone.
