"House of life. Synagogues and cemeteriesin Italy" edited by Andrea Morpurgo and Amedeo Spagnoletto, is a journey exploring two sacred places par excellence and their evolution over two thousand years of Italian Jewish history. The architecture of synagogues and cemeteries encompasses a variety of aspects and meanings: it reveals the complex relationship between a minority and the majority in Italian society; tells the story of the gradual construction of a sense of community, daily moments, and the rites of passage that mark the cycle of life, and stimulates ongoing debates about the existence of a so-called "Jewish architecture." The volume is enriched with numerous contributions from scholars of Jewish history and architectural history, who, starting from the earliest archaeological evidence to the present day, demonstrate how synagogues and cemeteries have always been essential spaces for defining Jewish identity.
