The collection of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea is now considered the most important in the world for 19th- and 20th-century Italian art. It also includes masterpieces by international artists such as Klimt, Van Gogh, Warhol, and Twombly. Its vastness and variety testify to the key role the museum has played—and continues to play—in the continuous construction of the national artistic heritage. The nearly 20,000 works in the collection express the main artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries: from Neoclassicism to Impressionism, from Divisionism to the historical Avant-gardes, from Futurism and Surrealism to a significant core of Italian art from the 1920s to the 1940s, and from post-WWII Informel to Pop Art and Arte Povera. The collection also includes artists of our time. The new guidebook, edited by Renata Cristina Mazzantini and Riccardo Salvatori, offers a selection of 100 of the collection's most iconic works. These are commented on by artists, writers, critics, and art historians driven by a memory, a personal preference, or an original perspective in presenting their "chosen work.
