On the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of his death, this guide offers an itinerary through the Umbrian places that welcomed Perugino and his works. An immersive journey into Perugino’s painting and the extraordinary artistic season of the Umbrian Renaissance.
Starting from Perugia—the city where Perugino (Città della Pieve, 1448 – Fontignano, 1523) lived for many years, had his workshop, and from which he took his name—the volume presents an itinerary through the master's masterpieces, from the frescoes in the Collegio del Cambio to the altarpieces for the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Monastery of Sant’Agnese.
Other cities in the region also preserve evidence of his passage: in Città della Pieve, his birthplace, visitors can admire the Adoration of the Magi in the Oratory of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, the Baptism of Christ in the Cathedral, and the frescoes in the church of Santa Maria dei Servi. In Cerqueto, the famous Saint Sebastian in the church of Santa Maria Assunta; in Corciano, the Assumption of Mary in the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
The journey continues through Deruta and Fontignano and concludes in Panicale, a small medieval village where the church of San Sebastiano houses the fresco dedicated to the saint’s martyrdom.
Each entry includes an overview of the location, the context of the artwork, visitor information, and the history and description of each fresco or altarpiece.
